Tricky Conditions In Langenargen

By Boats in Boats on September 5 2008

Source: valenciasailing.blogspot.com --- Sunday, May 11, 2008
[Source: World Match Racing Tour] The first day of Match Race Germany in Langenargen on Lake Constance saw a picture perfect landscape with only one slight problem…the wind, or lack of it. After the opening ceremony hosted by the Langenargen Yacht Club in the striking Montfort Castle last night the first 2 races of flight one were started this morning, and while the left looked to be favoured the wind soon died away from both sides leaving the races abandoned. The course was moved West in an effort to find more wind It seemed that finding wind was the biggest challenge of the day. With the teams split into 2 groups for Stage 1 of the competition. Group A made up of Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team, Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Alandia Sailing Team, Sebastien Col (FRA) K Challenge/French Match Racing Team, Staffan Lindberg (FIN) Alandia Sailing Team, Eric Monnin (SUI) Team Search.ch, and Jes Gram Hansen (DEN) Trifock Racing. Teams completed 3 out of 5 of scheduled flights. Group B consisting of Ian Williams (GBR) Team Pindar, Paolo Cian (ITA) Team Shosholoza, Damien Iehl (FRA) Team Sinbad, Peter Wibroe (DEN) Wibroe Sailing Team, Adam Minoprio (NZL) BlackMatch Racing/Emirates Team New Zealand and Markus Wieser (GER) Team Sea Dubai took to the water in the afternoon. With 8 of the top 10 ISAF Ranked sailors competing at Match Race Germany, spectators were guaranteed some close racing, and picking a clear favourite could be anyone’s ...

Holland crews part of Chicago Yacht Club’s 100th Race to Mackinac

By Boats in Boats on September 5 2008
Source: www.hollandsentinel.com --- Wednesday, July 16, 2008
The benchmark for Doug and Heather Petter’s summer is on the horizon. It will be a historic sailing trip on Lake Michigan this weekend. The Chicago Yacht Club’s 100th Race to Mackinac begins Saturday, and the Petters will join a record-setting field for the longest annual freshwater sailing distance race in the world. MORE ON THE RACE Folklore adds to the challenge of the Chicago to Mackinac Race, skipper Doug Petter said. Read more at blogs.hollandsentinel.com/alan. They will leave from Chicago’s Navy Pier and travel 289.4 nautical miles to Mackinac Island. They could reach the finish line as early as Sunday or as late as Tuesday. “It has a long heritage,” Doug Petter, a 42-year-old from Holland who owns an industrial filtration company, said of the Chicago to Mackinac race. “It will have crews from all over the country and the world. You’ll hear New Zealand accents. There was a Russian team a couple of years ago. “There is a lot of prestige that goes along with it. It makes it a lot of fun.” The Petters’ boat, the 43-foot-long Willie J, is one of 15 with ties to Holland entered in the race. They belong to Macatawa Bay Yacht Club, which has 13 members participating. Bayshore Yacht Club of Holland has two members in the field. It’s a full field, with more than 450 boats from across the country expected to sail after receiving an invitation from the Chicago Yacht Club. The event has come a long way since the first race in 1898 tha ...

New Testing Approaches for Mobile Phone Quality

By Boats in Boats on September 5 2008
Unlike wireline service, mobile phones rely on often precarious over-the-air radio transmissions to carry time-sensitive voice traffic. Add to this the transforming of voice calls into IP-routed traffic; microphones and speakers disconnected from the device via Bluetooth; high-bandwidth competition from e-mail, data, and video downloads – plus multiple hand-offs between network elements, like routers, switches, and gateways – and there’s a Pandora’s box of traps in the transaction where voice quality can degrade.
